How to Stuff Sofa Cushions

When your sofa begins to sag and feel uncomfortable you do not have to replace it. Instead refill the sofa cushions and make it good as new.

  1. First: Measure

Measure around your cushions. They are usually the same size. Subtract about two inches from both the length and the width. Also measure the height and thickness.

  2. Second: Buy a memory foam mattress

Choose a memory foam mattress that matches your sofa cushions in height. Draw the dimensions on your memory foam mattress. Then cut out the squares. Cut out one square for each of your cushions.

  3. Third: Open the cushion covers

Hopefully your covers have a zipper. If not, you need a seam ripper to open up one of the sides. If you cannot use the old cushion at all, remove it. Otherwise you can cut the square mattress piece in half and slide the pieces in separately on top of the old cushion. Zip the cushion back up or sew it shut again.

  4. Fourth: Wrap with Dacron

People often use Dacron in upholstery. If your cushions have few issues, you can remove the inner cushion and carefully wrap it with layers of Dacron or Fiberfill. Dacron and Fiberfill do not compress the cushion, and it can last a long time and does not need a lot of cleaning. Put it on the top, bottom and front edge. Glue it down so it does not bunch up.

  5. Fifth: Contact an upholstery company or your furniture company

You can also replace your cushion with a similar one. Measure it and call a company that specializes in upholstery or the company that made your furniture. Sometimes they can send you the exact size filling you need. You can restore your sofa to its former comfort level without the high cost of buying a new one.
