How to Reupholster a Sofa

After a few years, your once beautiful sofa that was your pride and joy in the living room may start to show signs of wear and tear. Because a good quality sofa is quite expensive, you may find yourself looking for ways to revamp your couch. An inexpensive idea that is far superior to purchasing a new sofa when your budget is tight, is to simply reupholster the sofa. Reupholstering a sofa is a great way to give your sofa a new look without breaking the bank.

  1. First: Take measurements

The first step in reupholstering a sofa is to take measurements. Measure every panel of the sofa as well as all of the sofa cushions. You do not need perfect measurements; however, make sure that you measure enough so that every inch of the sofa is covered. If this is your first time doing this type of project, get a little extra fabric just in case you make a mistake.

  2. Second: Get the fabric

After you have done your measurements, the next step is to purchase your fabric. You can do this at craft stores and many big box stores like Walmart.

  3. Third: Remove old sofa fabric

Once you are ready to start reupholstering the sofa, you then need to remove each panel of the sofa one piece at a time. After doing so, cut the new fabric around the old fabric and keep tabs on exactly where to place each piece.

  4. Fourth: Stitch away

After all the fabric is cut, sew the new fabric onto the sofa exactly where the old pieces were. It is best if you take a few pictures of the sofa before tearing it apart just in case you forgot how it looked.

  5. Fifth: Enjoy your hard work

Once all the panels and cushions are replaced, you old and tired sofa looks as good as new. You also have the satisfaction of a job well done.
